Spanish Tapas at Home: Pan Con Tomate Recipe

Toasted bread with tomato is one of the simplest and most delicious Spanish tapas around.

It goes by many names in Spanish: pan con tomate or pan tumaca, and pa amb tomàquet in Catalan. There are different ways of preparing this classic dish: you'll find it with grated tomato, tomato slices, a blended tomato mixture reminiscent of salmorejo, or with just a raw tomato that you rub on bread! What all of them have in common is that they are delicious and beyond simple. Whether it's for breakfast or tapas at night, make your own with our pan con tomate recipe.
It doesn't get simpler than this pan con tomate recipe: all you need is thick bread, quality tomatoes and some salt and olive oil, and you can prepare one of the most famous Spanish tapas and breakfasts at home!

Just one of the many ways of preparing Spanish toast with tomato, this pan con tomate recipe is our personal favorite! Whip it together with ingredients you already have laying around the house. Just make sure to use quality tomatoes and thick bread that will hold up and not get soggy!

 4 medium tomatoes
 ½ loaf of whole-wheat, rustic, or unleavened bread, sliced medium-thick
 1 clove of garlic
 extra virgin olive oil
 salt to taste
 a few thin slices of Spanish Serrano or Iberian ham (optional, but highly recommended!)

Toast sliced bread on a baking sheet at 250°F until evenly browned, flipping halfway through.

Cut tomatoes in half, and grate them into a small bowl on a box grater, discarding the stem and skins.

Add about 1 tablespoon of olive oil and a pinch of salt to the bowl.

Cut the clove of garlic in half and rub the raw garlic on the toasted bread.

Spoon the tomato mixture onto the slices of garlic toast, and top with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt.

Optionally, top with a slice of jamón (Serrano or Iberian).
