What to Expect on Your Tour
Madrid’s tapas scene is famous, and famously confusing. The city’s historic centre is packed with tapas bars and many are tourist traps or simply not very good. So let us lead you on an enchanting tapas adventure to four of the city’s best tapas bars, each full of locals, amazing food and delicious wine. And along the way you’ll also see the main sights and discover Madrid’s incredible history on our 4-hour two-in-one tapas and history tour.
With hundreds of 5-star rave reviews and rated #1 on TripAdvisor, we offer Madrid’s best tapas tours!
Your evening will begin in true local style with award-winning Joselito acorn-fed Iberian ham (running upwards of €900 a leg and regarded by experts as some of the best jamón in the country) and cool Spanish vermouth served on tap. Over the course of the evening you’ll taste sizzling garlic prawns from the century-old tapas bar credited with inventing the dish, dive into hidden taverns where they serve delicious and unique house specialties and sit down to hot-off-the-grill plates from the bustling bar that famous chef Andrew Zimmern loved (when he visited with one of our guides no less!). Of course, you’ll wash the tapas down with excellent Spanish wine, vermouth and other drinks.*
Along the way your passionate, expert guide will give you the tips and tricks for doing tapas like a local, so you feel confident heading into bustling tapas bars for the rest of your stay.
And great food and wine are just the start. On this 2-in-1 tapas and history tour, we’ll fill your mind as well as your belly. Between taverns your guide will lead you past the Spanish capital’s most emblematic sites and its hidden historic corners. From the city’s Moorish beginnings, through the Spanish inquisition to the Spanish civil war – you’ll walk through Madrid’s fascinating history and get a true understanding of the incredible events that shaped this city.

The tour lasts approximately four and a half hours (give or take 15 minutes). The tour covers approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) and there is only seating at the final (fifth stop). Please note that it is traditional and authentic in Madrid tapas bars to stand and eat at the bar, and some of the taverns we visit do not have tables or seating.
Don’t worry, you won’t be part of a massive hoard following a guide with a flag or a flamenco fan! We keep our groups small and intimate, so the tour can squeeze into small, hidden places and you get personal time with your guide. The maximum number of guests on this tour is usually 9 people and we only require two guests to operate a tour.
We currently offer the tour year round most days of the week. The tour is not available on 24th, 25th, 31st December or 1 January (due to the closure of vendors).
The tour starts promptly at either 5pm, 6:30pm or 7:30pm (please check your booking confirmation email for which tour you’re on). We ask our guests to come to the meeting point 10 minutes before the tour start time in order to check in with your guide. This ensures we get off to a timely start, and that first taste doesn’t get cold!
The tour meets in the Plaza Isabel II (scroll up for a Google Map view). When you book your tour you will receive an automated email from us with more precise meeting details.
The tour ends in the Puerta del Sol square
This tour is currently adaptable for vegetarians, pescatarians and those who don’t eat either pork or beef. Also, if you don’t drink alcohol we will serve you non-alcoholic drinks. Please note that there are limited vegetarian options at one tavern, but we’ll ensure vegetarians are well-fed by the end! The tour is not adaptable for those on a vegan diet.
We can adapt the tour for those who do not eat gluten, but the tour is not suitable for those with celiac disease (due to the risk of gluten cross-contact).
Please mark any dietary preferences when you book.
If you have another dietary requirement, or a food allergy, please email firstname.lastname@example.org before you book and we’ll do our best to accommodate you. If you have a food allergy, we may ask you to sign a waiver at the start of the tour.
The tour does not include transport to the meeting place, or from the ending point (ask your guide for guidance at the end of the tour if you’re not sure where you are).
Also, please feel free to tip your guide if you think they did a great job! The standard gratuity in the tour industry is 10-15%.
Most importantly, your appetite!
Also, keep in mind that tours take place rain or shine, so please dress appropriately and bring an umbrella if it looks like rain. Also, we recommend you wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be walking a few kilometres. Finally, while we do serve water on the tour at some stops, we recommend you bring a bottle of water.
