What to Expect on Your Tour

Join us for a true Madrid tapas crawl, led by a passionate foodie. You’ll visit the most authentic family-run gems in the city center, and pop in and out of the busy bars just like the locals do. By the end of the evening you’ll know exactly how to do tapas like a local, and have tasted some of Madrid’s best specialty tapas and drinks.

Start your night off in true Madrid style—surrounded by locals as you sip vermouth and nibble on tapas. Your expert guide will let you in on the secret to this local aperitif tradition as you discover what going for tapas really means here in Spain.

Next, head across one of Madrid’s main squares to a popular local tapas bar for a draft beer and delicious bites. You’ll learn the owner’s story and fall in love with the chef’s amazing food.

At the third tapas bar, you’ll taste one of Madrid’s signature tapas, gambas al ajillo—a dish this family-run bar claims to have invented! They’ve been in business since 1906, so we’ll take their word for it! You’ll also be able to order a glass of wine made from the same family’s vineyard in the Toro region.

Finally, you’ll squeeze into one of Madrid’s last remaining traditional tapas institutions– a no-frills place where locals pack in for favorite dishes (including the Madrid specialty– pig ear!). Adventurous or not, there’s something delicious for everyone at this spot.

By the end of the night, you’ll know exactly what it means to do tapas like a local, and why tapas culture can’t exist outside of Spain (so you’ll have to come back!).

And as with all Devour Madrid tours, your guide will give you a copy of our Devouring Madrid guide, which is packed with all our favorite places to eat and drink in the city! So put down your guidebook and get ready to experience Madrid like a local!

Great question! A Devour Madrid food tour is a fun, fascinating and (most importantly!) delicious introduction to the majestic city of Madrid. Our food tours visit some of the city’s best traditional eateries, including tapas bars, local markets, taverns and shops, and hidden gems that few even know exist! You’ll taste some of Madrid’s best local food, and gain fascinating insight into its age-old traditions. We keep our groups small and every tour is led by an English-speaking guide who knows Madrid like the back of their hand, and loves it to bits.
You’ll visit 4 traditional tapas bars, trying a delicious assortment of homemade tapas including Madrid’s most famous garlic & chilli prawns and the city’s most incredible grilled tapas at a local favorite. The tapas will be accompanied by different Spanish drinks (like wines, beer, and vermouth) and you’ll learn lots of tips for tapas in Spain. You’ll try at least 10 tapas, enough for dinner. All tastes are subject to change based on seasonality and our vendors’ holiday schedules, but we guarantee they’ll always be delicious! You’ll be led by a knowledgeable and fun English-speaking guide and Madrid expert. Plus, when you book you’ll receive a link to our Devouring Madrid mini-guide, packed with recommendations so you’ll eat well before and after your tour.
The tour lasts approximately 3 hours (give or take 15 minutes). The tour covers approximately 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) and there is only seating guaranteed at the final bar. Please note that it is traditional and authentic in Madrid tapas bars to stand and eat at the bar, and some of the taverns we visit do not have tables or seating.
Don’t worry, you won’t be part of a massive hoard following a guide with a flag or a flamenco fan! We keep our groups small and intimate, so the tour can squeeze into small, hidden places and you get personal time with your guide. The maximum number of guests on this tour is usually 10 people and all of our tours are guaranteed to operate, even with just 1 person.
