What to Expect on Your Tour

This walking wine tasting tour takes place across four of Madrid’s best tucked-away tapas bars! You’ll visit family-run eateries to try delicious vermouth on tap, freshly sliced jamón paired with sparkling cava and hot-off-the-grill tapas washed down with full-bodied reds. Your expert wine guide will lead you through the complete Spanish wine experience, and by the end you’ll know exactly how to do tapas like a local (and properly order a glass of wine in Spain!)

Start your night off in true Madrid style—surrounded by locals as you sip vermouth and nibble on tapas. Your expert guide will let you in on the secret to this local aperitif tradition!

Next, you’ll be whisked away to a family-run deli and tapas bar that specializes in Spain’s greatest delicacy—jamón! Watch as it’s sliced right before your eyes by a master carver! You’ll enjoy melt-in-your-mouth Iberian ham with a glass of sparkling Spanish cava.

Afterwards, you’ll head to a hidden gem where you’ll taste homemade tapas paired with two delicious Spanish wines, a white and a rosé.

Then you’re off to another local tavern run by a family who makes their own wine! Over plates of sizzling shrimp and hot-off-the-grill tapas, your expert guide will lead a tasting of the family’s three red wines! You’ll finish with something sweet—an exquisite chocolate-covered fig paired with the bar’s own sweet red wine.

By the end of the night, you’ll know exactly what it means to do tapas like a local and will have a new appreciation for Spain—the world’s largest vineyard and the sleeping giant of the wine world!

And as with all Devour Madrid  tours, your guide will give you a copy of our Devouring Madrid guide, which is packed with all our favorite places to eat and drink in the city! So put down your guidebook and get ready to experience Madrid like a local!

Great question! A Devour Madrid food tour is a fun, fascinating and (most importantly!) delicious introduction to the majestic city of Madrid. Our food tours visit some of the city’s best traditional eateries, including tapas bars, local markets, taverns and shops, and hidden gems that few even know exist! You’ll taste some of Madrid’s best local food, and gain fascinating insight into its age-old traditions. We keep our groups small and every tour is led by an English-speaking guide who knows Madrid like the back of their hand, and loves it to bits.
You’ll visit 4 traditional tapas bars, trying a delicious assortment of homemade tapas including some of Spain’s best acorn-fed Iberian ham, Madrid’s most famous garlic & chilli prawns and the city’s most incredible off-menu meatballs. The tapas will be paired with 8 different Spanish wines (across a variety of styles such as vermouth, sparkling cava, whites and reds) and you’ll learn lots of tips for enjoying wine in Spain. You’ll try at least 10 tapas, enough for a (large) dinner. All tastes are subject to change based on seasonality and our vendors’ holiday schedules, but we guarantee they’ll always be delicious! You’ll be led by a knowledgeable and fun English-speaking guide and Madrid expert. Plus, when you book you’ll receive a link to our Devouring Madrid mini-guide, packed with recommendations so you’ll eat well before and after your tour. And on tour you'll also receive our Madrid Wine Guide, which is full of tips for enjoying wine in Madrid.
The tour lasts approximately 3.5 hours (give or take 15 minutes). The tour covers approximately 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) and there is only seating at the final bar. Please note that it is traditional and authentic in Madrid tapas bars to stand and eat at the bar, and some of the taverns we visit do not have tables or seating.
Don’t worry, you won’t be part of a massive hoard following a guide with a flag or a flamenco fan! We keep our groups small and intimate, so the tour can squeeze into small, hidden places and you get personal time with your guide. The maximum number of guests on this tour is usually 10 people and we only require two guests to operate a tour.
We want as many people to be able to enjoy our tours as possible. Scroll up the page a little to see what dietary restrictions this tour is adaptable for.
Given the wine-focused nature of this tour, it's not available for guests under 18 years old.
The tour does not include transport to the meeting place, or from the ending point (ask your guide for guidance at the end of the tour if you’re not sure where you are). Also, please feel free to tip your guide if you think they did a great job! The standard gratuity in the tour industry is 10-15%.
Most importantly, your appetite! Also, keep in mind that tours take place rain or shine, so please dress appropriately and bring an umbrella if it looks like rain. Also, we recommend you wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be walking a few kilometers. Finally, while we do serve water on the tour at some stops, we recommend you bring a bottle of water.
Of course! We regularly offer private tours to families, groups of friends and corporate groups. Email us your group size, the date you'd like the tour and anything else you'd like us to keep in mind, and we'll get back to you within 24 hours.
