What to Expect on Your Tour

    TOUR SNAPSHOT
Learn to do tapas like a local as you make your way through Madrid’s city center! In between four iconic authentic Madrid tapas bars, you’ll hear the story of how Madrid went from a small village to the capital of one of the world’s greatest empires! Between sipping Spanish wine and devouring the best of Madrid’s traditional tapas, your expert guide will bring the city’s fascinating history to life as you wind in and out of grand plazas and mystery-filled streets.

    STOP-BY-STOP

Start your night off in true Madrid style—surrounded by locals as you sip vermouth and nibble on tapas in a historic tavern with connections to the Spanish Civil War. Your expert guide will let you in on the secret to this local aperitif tradition as you discover what going for tapas really means here in Spain.

Next up is a walk down to Madrid’s royal palace, where you’ll get a mini-lesson on how Madrid was founded. As you wander through the oldest part of Madrid—the Habsburg neighborhood—you’ll discover its hidden squares and secrets.

The next tapas bar is known for one thing—fantastic grilled mushrooms! While here, you’ll learn what most locals drink (it’s NOT sangria!) as you enjoy its famous mushrooms and Padrón peppers. As you make your way to the third tapas bar of the night, you’ll pass through one of Madrid’s key squares and its hidden backstreets, as your guide brings more of Madrid’s storied past to life.

At the third tapas bar, you’ll taste one of Madrid’s signature tapas, gambas al ajillo—a dish this family-run bar claims to have invented! They’ve been in business since 1906, so we’ll take their word for it! You’ll also be able to order a glass of wine made from the same family’s vineyard in the Toro region.

Before heading to our last tapas stop of the evening, you’ll walk through another of Madrid’s iconic squares where your guide will bring to life stories from Madrid’s fairly recent past, and finally, you’ll squeeze into one of Madrid’s last remaining traditional tapas institutions– a no-frills place where locals pack in for favorite dishes (including the Madrid specialty– pig ear!). Adventurous or not, there’s something delicious for everyone at this spot.

And as with all Devour Madrid tours, your guide will give you a copy of our Devouring Madrid guide, which is packed with all our favorite places to eat and drink in the city! So put down your guidebook and get ready to experience Madrid like a local!

Great question! A Devour Madrid food tour is a fun, fascinating and (most importantly!) delicious introduction to the majestic city of Madrid. Our food tours visit some of the city’s best traditional eateries, including tapas bars, local markets, taverns and shops, and hidden gems that few even know exist! You’ll taste some of Madrid’s best local food, and gain fascinating insight into its age-old traditions. We keep our groups small and every tour is led by an English-speaking guide who knows Madrid like the back of their hand, and loves it to bits.
You’ll visit 4 traditional tapas bars, trying a delicious assortment of homemade tapas including some of Spain’s best acorn-fed Iberian ham, Madrid’s most famous garlic & chilli prawns (cooked before your eyes!), and mouth-watering hot-off-the-grill stuffed mushrooms. You’ll try at least 10 tapas, enough for a (large) dinner. And of course, at each tapas bar you’ll pair your food with a delicious drink (Spanish wine, draught beer or vermouth). All tastes are subject to change based on seasonality and our vendors’ holiday schedules, but we guarantee they’ll always be delicious! You’ll be led by a knowledgeable and fun English-speaking guide and Madrid expert. Between tapas bars they will lead you through winding streets and grand squares, giving you a fun, interesting historic walking tour of the old city. Plus, when you book you’ll receive a link to our Devouring Madrid mini-guide, packed with recommendations so you’ll eat well before and after your tour! Our guests love this tour because it’s both a tapas tour and a walking tour – the perfect 2-in-1 to get your head (and your belly) around Madrid!
The tour lasts approximately 4 hours (give or take 15 minutes). The tour covers approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) and there is only seating at the final bar. Please note that it is traditional and authentic in Madrid tapas bars to stand and eat at the bar, and some of the taverns we visit do not have tables or seating.
Don’t worry, you won’t be part of a massive hoard following a guide with a flag or a flamenco fan! We keep our groups small and intimate, so the tour can squeeze into small, hidden places and you get personal time with your guide. The maximum number of guests on this tour is usually 10 people and all of our tours are guaranteed to operate, even with just 1 person.
We want as many people to be able to enjoy our tours as possible. Scroll up the page a little to see what dietary restrictions this tour is adaptable for.

Also, keep in mind that tours take place rain or shine, so please dress appropriately and bring an umbrella if it looks like rain.
